So here we are on day 10 of the gluten free diet. I’d also say casein-free, but I believe movie popcorn may have butter in it even if you ask for none, and Zoe drank some milk behind my back yesterday.
The big question: are there any changes? I’m not sure, but I’m going to log what’s going on:
Amelia: OK, not much movement here, however, she IS a lot less aggressive than she’s been in a while. There have been some flair ups, but bad attitudes and raising hands have ruled the day. I’ve also gotten stricter, making sure to follow through on threats, taking away movies and games, and assigning unpleasant tasks. She’s been more compliant and also more affectionate, so maybe it’s the 2 things working in conjunction. She’s also eating and loving all her lunch (wow!) and whipping through homework.
Zoe; Well, days 2 and 3 were marked by tantrums and fits of screaming and crying for no reason. Then it seemed to level off, but not sure if that’s because I forgot to tell the school and they let her have glutens. I’ve been putting food in her school bag since Thursday. She has been acting out today and yesterday.
That said, she did something remarkable yesterday. She was having a major meltdown, just before the schoolbus came, and took off all her clothes. Determined to get away from us (myself, sitter and TSS), she jumped into the bathroom, put the donut on the toilet bowl, pulled down her pullup and sat on it. This is pretty AMAZING. She never ever sits on the bowl at home, and to do it of her own volition was amazing. She did again later.
NOW what you should know is that it’s been blisteringly hot and a 5yo in a pullup is very prone to rashes. So despite my best (and I REALLY do need to go out and get some Monkey Butt), she has gone back and forth between, clear, light rash, and serious red patches. My thinking is she has had some kind of breakthrough in both her brain and sensory, realizing that sitting on the potty leads to not have to wear those awful sweat-inducing pullups and that they ARE truly uncomfortable enough to warrant a change. Just last week, we spoke with the therapist about how she was not ready for potty training…could this be a step towards that?
Lots to think about, and I know I have not even listed a bunch of minute changes I’ve seen that, true, any psychologist could put up to brain development. We shall see.

I’m glad the gluten free diet is (seemingly) working. It takes such an adjustment, but then it gets so easy. Hang in there! Yay for potty progress!

Thanks CJ. Things will be better when my schedule clears up..which is going to happen soon!

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. From the way Amelia and Zoe react it is hard to tell in such a short period whether the diet is really working on them. I would suggest that you try the diet for a longer period, after all I don’t think there is any harm with the diet.

Hi yes, I agree! i know it actually takes 5-9 months for the dairy & gluten molecules to be completely out of their bodies. Thanks!

I am starting my four year old autistic son on the GFCF diet next week. He got diagnosed with gluten intolerance. I am going to follow your blog!
