As you’ve read, Chris and I decided to foray gently into the restricted diet arena with our kids by first eliminating caseins. It was a BUSY week, happily filled with an unexpected visit from friends, and we did not get to grocery shopping until New Year’s Eve. Caseins are found in dairy, and since we are not so big on dairy, it was pretty easy to shop without them. We had already blown breakfast so what better way, we thought, to start the year, clean and fresh!
Chris, however, had booked an impromptu getaway to Hershey for New Year’s Day. Yes, it’s the Chocolate Capital, but it could easily be called the Casein Capital! Chocolate had caseins (even the dark) and Chris felt bad for children eating fruit for breakfast (really?) and shared his buttered bagel. (While I was there, I had a salad with chocolate dusted nuts, a chocolate martini, a little beer with chocolate in it and, well, you guessed, chocolate.) As we struggled to find meals for the kids, we learned a valuable lesson:
When on vacation with restrictive dieters, bring your own food and stay with a kitchen.
What a shame we just sold our kitchen-equipped time share. Anyway, a good time was had and much meat and fruit consumed, while we enjoyed the real reason we went away:
Ok, so day 3 is back to school and I prepped notes for the teacher’s (Zoe’s first Monday at school!) and snacks went it. Except that once home, Zoe made a beeline for the fridget, grabbed the remaining bar of butter, and chewed halfway through it. Sigh. Ok, well Tuesday… she found the stash of remaining chocolate chips (also milk and milk fat laden) and chomped through that. Lesson:
Eliminate all foods in the house. Period. Or put under lock & key.
So yes, I know have random bunches of chocolate hidden all over the house. Some of it is organic, though, but that’s for ME. I thought we did good after that, but I saw that pretzels were given to Zoe at school today, but maybe that was an error on her sheet, since the 2 cups of applesauce I gave her were gone. Lesson?
Just send the kids with all the snacks they can eat for the week and daily notes, if necessary.
Well, it’s been an interesting 7 days. Let’s see how the next 7 go…

Hi there!!! Remember me?? We had the genetic testing done today for my 4 year old daughter. They did a “sigchip os” set of testing – so hopefully we will have answers in a couple of weeks. Our older daughter also saw the dr today and has been diagnosed with Aspergers. It’s been a long day!!!

Hi Angie, sorry to hear that. I hope the results come out ok. I don’t know about that test…I know so little about testing! Hope all goes well.
