Sinus Allergy Relief For Your Family

Does your family need sinus allergy relief? While for most people, allergy season firmly sets in during the spring, for me, late summer and fall into winter are awful allergy seasons. The worst attacks I’ve ever had, in fact, happened on Thanksgiving holidays, one on a trip to Vermont and another on a trip to Delaware but I suffer at home too. I was excited to receive a sample of FiltreteTM Filters to help me and my family. Why?

Climate Change And Allergies

I also tend to have them when the weather is unseasonably mild, wrecking my normal love of winter. My daughter can also suffer from allergies, and we’ve done the work to help her out with those. The last few years, the winter weather has gotten shorter and shorter. It’s barely been as cold as it should be in my part of the world in the winter season, and then it often jumps to high heat. It’s been harder and harder to get sinus allergy relief.

And that means I suffer from extreme sinus headaches. My allergies render me useless! Nothing seems to work on them at all.  I’m not exactly sure what I’m allergic to, I just know that my allergies don’t align up with other people’s and that many things can trigger it: artificial fragrances, a stuffy house, too much dust sometimes, the onset of rain on a very humid day, humidity on a cold day. I suspect, though, that I’m allergic to mold. And opening the windows to release the smells is very challenging when you have severe allergies so it can get pretty stuffy in my home. My daughter used to suffer but rarely gets allergies anymore now. I’m sad to say, what cured me didn’t help her at all. And they seem to be getting worse…

When Bacon Stinks

A few years back, my allergy had been aggravated lately by cooking bacon. My home’s ventilation system was not working properly and it was triggering my allergies left and right.

In fact, because we cook 90% of our meals, the odor can build up easily and quickly and that can trigger my sneezing reactions. The way air circulates brings them directly to my bedroom, and since I have a sensitive nose, they’ve been known to keep me up all night. (Yes, I’m that sensitive!)

Living In “Allergy Alley”

Now I really love where I live now, but shortly after we moved here, a few locals told me this area is known as “allergy alley.”

GREAT…

Actually, my allergies have been difficult since I’ve lived in Pennsylvania in general. As for the rest of my family, you already know that Zoe is highly sensitive to everything and Amelia suffered allergies for most of her young life until we removed dairy. That doesn’t mean that we don’t have a sniffly nose and sneezy days. Amelia has also suffered headaches and some days, Zoe just retires to her bed, making me wonder if she too has sinus headaches. Even Chris has complained of a few since we’ve lived here.

10 Ways To Protect Your Family From Sinus Allergies

There are some simple steps you can do to give your family sinus allergy relief no matter what season you’re in.

  1. Know your triggers.
Humid weather, out-of-season weather, and fragrances set me off. I keep an eye on when I will be exposed to those conditions. For Amelia, the only thing I’ve really noticed that triggers an allergy attack is dairy. Since we’ve stopped giving it to her, she hasn’t had a single runny nose in years.
  2. Avoid certain foods.
When I feel an allergy coming on, I know that certain foods will likely make it worse. They include dairy, coffee, chocolate, alcohol and bread products. Yes, I know – ALL the fun foods. Avoiding them can provide real sinus allergy relief.
  3. Keep your house dust free and clean.
I’m not good at this myself, but the dustier your house is the worse you’ll feel. Use a non-toxic cleaner like Aunt Fannie’s Cleaning Vinegar and Seven Generation laundry detergent. You should also keep your oven clean to prevent accumulating smells from piling up. Be sure to use a non-toxic cleaning method and not the automatic oven cleaner, or your home will smell WORSE.
  4. Buy a HEPA vacuum.
If you’re in the market for a new vacuum cleaner, a vacuum with a HEPA filter can help eliminate allergens.
  5. Be mindful when remodeling.
We just repainted our downstairs living areas and kitchen with no-VOC paint. I’m happy to say, there were no toxic smells and the place aired out immediately with just keeping the windows open a crack. Home improvements nearly always unearth unwanted allergens and toxins, so take care to select products that are nontoxic.
  6. Avoid air freshener, candles, and fragrances in general.
These are actually way more toxic than you think! Fragrances that are added to products, from fresheners to feminine care products, are not regulated because they contain proprietary formulas. The scent can come from 10s of thousands of chemicals that you don’t know how it affects your family. Instead, I suggest getting a diffuser and essential oils. We love ours!
  7. Air out your home.
When it’s temperate out, open up the windows and air out your home to get the toxins out and the fresh air in! This is an excellent idea to do at the change of seasons or after a long cold or rainy period.
  8. Clean out air ducts, vents, and screens.
Those protective devices collect all kinds of garbage on them. And if you own a home, an uncleaned vent can stop up your dryer from working if it’s gas.
  9. Use essential oils.
First off, switch off from any kind of nasty toxic fragrances to scent your home and various products to essential oils, IF you are not allergic to any of it. Secondly, there are a number of recipes that may help but most include peppermint, which is very strong. From my shop at NYR Organic, I diffuse a nice blend of peppermint and lavender essential oils when I have a nasty sinus headache.
  10. Buy an air filter that reduces allergies.
Homeowners, your HVAC system needs to be updated regularly so make sure your filters are worth the investment by having them do extra duty

Filtrete Filters Can Provide Sinus Allergy Relief For Your Family

Filtrete 1500 Ultra Allergen FilterFiltreteTM Filters are a great way to get the job of allergy prevention done. We used the Filtrete Healthy Living 1500 MPR filter in our system. It was easy to install and this Ultra Allergen Reduction Filter protects against:

  • dust and lint
  • pollen and pet dander
  • bacteria and virus

Blocking Viruses: Good For Everyone!

This is awesome, especially since we have a pet – our cat Bello loves the great outdoors but he also loves to cuddle with me and with the children – which means dander EVERYWHERE. Certified Asthma & Allergy Friendly, the 1500 MPR is the ideal filter for a home filled with sensitive people like all of us and furry pets. It lasts up to 3 months and according to Filtrete, it’s 90% effective at capturing those tiny particles listed above – including mold spores. It can also attract those nasty microscopic particles that carry bacteria or viruses so that they don’t make their way into your kids’ bodies.

The house air feels clearer since installing this filter and I am less bothered by allergies in my home than outside right now, so I know the filter is doing its job. And yea, the bacon odor is gone too.

Only one of us has allergies, but those seasonal ones knock the poor kid silly! I should look into a filter. Thanks for the idea!

This would be great for us to use in our home too. With the change in season, my allergies have certainly been acting up as well.
