The Fast Metabolism Diet

Filed Under: nontoxic, what to eat Tagged With: fast metabolism diet

Recently, I received a copy of “The Fast Metabolism Diet” by Haylie Pomroy, to write this post sponsored by She Speaks. I was required to maintain this diet for 28 days.  Let’s learn more about The Fast Metabolism Diet: Eat More Food and Lose More Weight.

The Fast Metabolism Diet: Is It For You?

Now, I hate the word “diet”, but you can only eat certain foods on certain days, and the list is pretty restrictive.  The good news is that the foods are rich, amazing great. I did manage to stay on it for 2 weeks, and lost 5 pounds…although 4 of those I lost in the first week. The problem was I’m no  good at diets, and I think not losing more was my own failing.  Every time I’d remember one rule, I’d forget another.  But let’s dig into the review, shall we?

Who is this diet for? This is a perfect diet for anyone who has been told by their doctor that they need to lose weight quickly for health reasons.  You should pass this diet by your doctor, of course, but some of Haylie started this plan for  patients could not get surgeries due to weight issues.  But if you do any diet, I’d recommend this one BECAUSE of the a) detox, b) easy workouts, and c) insanely healthy menu.

Fast Metabolism Diet as Detox

Before joining this program, I downloaded the first chapter and made sure it made sense for me: no junk like aspertame and low fats foods, real food, and emphasis on healthy fats, organic foods, and no GMOs.  Check, check and check!  This diet, in fact, not only supports the way we eat around here, it’s easy to do if you’re gluten-free, and being dairy-free is part of the diet, making this the perfect diet for an allergen-free household.

I mentioned it’s a diet, but I’d rather have you think of it as a detox.  That is, you will be off preservatives, packaged foods, dairy, nitrates, etc., BUT you are also off the heavy hitters in my life: all alcohol, all coffee, and all chocolate, except a drop of cocoa powder.  The premise is that you are cleaning out your liver.  (All the science is an easy read in the book.)

Once I realized I was losing the diet battle, and went back to my ill-advised daily coffee or 3 habit, and late night drink of wine, I did NOT feel as good as I did on the diet.  This diet requires you to eat tons of vegetables, as well as lots of other good stuff (organic meat, heathy grains).  The first week, I not only lost that 4 pounds, my WAIST WENT IN.  Like, the sides – that’s right, that hard-to-lose area of “side waist” flab that I’ve had since 12 went AWAY.  Not my imagination – hubby told me!  (You know men never notice anything!)

The Downside

Ok, all of this applies to only to me, not the plan.  First of all, you need to drink half your body weight in water – I struggle to drink 1 or 2 glasses a day.  However, eliminating the coffee habit frees up lot of drinking time, but I’d often find myself at bedtime with 30 ounces to go.  Or my husband would walk in, reeking of Starbucks, so I’d steal a sip.  Or 4-5 hours would go by and I’d be stuck without food.  Or I’d wake up in Phase 2 and realize I hadn’t worked out in Phase 1.

Tips on Doing the Fast Metabolism Diet

It would have worked for me if I’d planned better, so here are tips that I recommend to do this diet, from a completely disorganized person:

  • Plan, plan, and prep.  Y Even plan your workouts, because there’s little guidance on exactly what to work out – the upside is that’s it’s flexible.
  • Spend a week or so customizing it for you. This was my biggest failing.
  • Hormal Natural Choice cold cuts is AWESOME and nitrate-free for when you’re in a bind.  And around here, it’s only $2.50 a pack at Walmart!

I do recommend this diet, especially if you’ve yo-yo dieted before. This will be an easy eating plan for you and will change your life!

I love the idea of lifestyle dieting. And detoxing? I so need to do that!

Yea, it is quite a life change! Actually, you notice the change (skin, sleep, feeling “right”) once you go OFF it. Amazing.

Well, yes and no. Once you get in a groove, it was easier! And I heard the app was priceless for keeping track.

Sounds like you would be successful with Paleo or Whole 30. I like the idea of cleaning out your liver. At least you gave it a shot. You will find something that works for you. Changing small habits a little at a time works well too. Hang in there!

Haven’t heard of those – I will check them out. We do some Paleo, since the kids are gluten- and dairy-free, but I’m interested in Whole 30.

Water is hard for me. I am working on drinking more by keeping it ice cold and drinking one cup every hour on the hour, just forcing it down.

That’s a good idea. The container worked for me..I drink more if I don’t have to actually GET IT. 🙂

I am the worst at dieting. I want to do a detox but I’m scared 🙂

Well, it was an interesting detox, less like a detox. Not like the crazy raw ones!

I think it does has a lot to do with the water intake. Nice review.

That’s what I’m hearing too, but the liver cleansing is probably a key component to feeling better.

Awesome review! I had heard of this recently and had no idea what it was. Will definitely keep it in mind for future use when my boot camp is over. It sounds similar to what we are doing now. 🙂

I think the easiest part of this for me was drinking the water. I drink more water than the program even calls for just because I am always thirsty!

    Hi all!
I am on Day 21 of FMD. While I normally drank 6 glasses of H2O a day…it wasn’t anywhere close to the 1/2 your body weight in ounces that Hayley requires. A close friend said that once you work up to it, you’ll find the water part easy. He was right! I started the ‘water work up” the week before I did the plan.
This is most definitely not a “diet” in the usual sense of the word. You WILL eat when you are not hungry!! It was amazing. I am a 5’6″, 44 yr old female and weighed 154 when I started…. I had seen a great endocrinologist & hormonal specialist, and a nutritionist before so I knew that I had the vitamins/nutrients I needed. My nutritionist recommended 1200/cal a day and I didn’t lose an ounce b/c I was in adrenal fatigue. FMD worked really well for me…. I am 9 lbs down at the beginning of Week 4.
Read the book….follow it…. and you will lose weight.
No dairy – even organic milk for me, along with no cheese, wine, and coffee were a bit of a challenge, but I am convinced that SO much of that is mental….. after the 1st week, I didn’t think about it again.
Meal planning is 100% key for this plan!!! The iPhone/iPad app makes it so much easier.
    Good luck out there!!!
