As I mentioned, some pretty not-so-great stuff happened recently. It hit us in the pocketbook..sooner or later, this happens to everyone, right? But this time, unlike the others, it got me worried. We don’t really have our ducks in a row when it comes to the girls’ futures.
Now I’d love to say that they will be fine and dandy, and be able to live on their own when we are gone, but I can’t. I’m hopeful, but right now, I don’t see that crystalizing yet. And we only have a teeny nest egg, and with both of us freelancing, that means that all the future savings and planning is up to us.
This week has been interesting for me, because this crisis has gotten me to really step up my look for work in the field I desire (writing) as well as turn myself into a gluten-free frugalista. Managing that and the kids the household pretty much explains why I’ve been wiped out lately, even when I’m sleeping solid nights and just the thought of future planning makes it worse. Hard to focus on it when I have present-day school issues and homeopathy and summer looming ahead.
It seems I’m not alone. A new research by MassMutual,” State of the American Mom,” shows that we moms find this hard to achieve – too busy to properly plan. MassMutual has create a quiz to help get you (and me) thinking about the future planning process and shows small steps we can take to get this off the ground.
This year, when we are back on solid financial income as I have faith will happen soon, Chris and I have promised each other that we will put away funds just for our children, for their futures, and hopefully some for ourselves as well. How are you planning for your future? Check out MassMutual’s website for information and to find a professional who can help you.

Yes. It happens to everyone! But, I think today we have much more opportunities to achieve our goals – in fact within few years. We can achieve more than our expectations and secure the best future for our children.

Viviana, so true! I have lots of home for the future myself.
Viviana says
Yes. 🙂 And, how I’m planning my future? Well, I’m in Psychology, and Mind Development, so these are the things which can help me to build a true business online. In fact, right now, I am doing better than my previous job. And, I am happy that I did it and took a right decision on a very right time. I also started with freelance, but if you ask me the truth, freelance is like a job. It’s like you have to work 24/7. So, I left it early.
Gina B says
Yes, freelance IS like a job! The less you work, the less you make, so you do need to be at it about 40 hours a week to make a living, lol! Good for you, good luck on your endeavors!

Thank You Gina! I don’t know I should say this or not. It’s your personal matter. But, I’ve seen that you used affiliate links etc. on your blog. Why don’t you go in that business model? I mean, you don’t need to do work 24/7 at least, and there is a huge potential of earning too.
I am just curious to know this. You have talent. I’ve read your other posts too. Your words have power. You have knowledge regarding parenting. Then why not you going for affiliate marketing?
I’m sorry again, if it’s a person question. I am just curious.

Someone once pointed out to me, when I had the mentality that we work to take care of the kids/their futures – while that is good, your grown children can still finance their futures, you can’t finance retirement. Planning to take care of yourself when you’re old would be the best peace of mind you could leave your kids.
Gina B says
Hi Amy! My kids have disabilities and I’m not sure they can fund their own futures, but I do think retirement planning is important too.

Yes, constant financial crisis and its getting frustrating. With a 6 figure student loan debt and my husbands job doesn’t cover the loan payments, bills are behind, etc. I try to stay positive through it all.
Gina B says
Oh gosh. At least I have that debt behind me, going to school back before any of them cost 6 figures except the ivy leagues. Sheesh, what will my kids do? But, true, Shauna, stay positive! Personally, God has gotten me out of more financial pickles than I count, so I always look at it that way.
