You’ve become convinced of the importance of using safer products for your family, both for their physical health and to help your kids’ brains grow, learn and thrive. Great!
Problem is, you get to the store and you just don’t know what to buy. You read the ingredients and think,
What the heck is SLS?
What does this Latin looking word mean?
It’s paraben-free, is that safe enough?
If I can’t pronounce it, it’s not safe, right? Or is that naive?
Or, maybe you’ve done what I’ve done at times in the past: sit down with an ingredients list and look up every single item in EWG’s Skin Deep database to determine how toxic or safe each substance is, or if it’s related to allergies, etc. (I can tell you, this is HOURS of work!)
Maybe you’re uncertain if you should trust products that are FDA approved after hearing about the problems with Essure or other items. Are you also wondering if a product is more likely to be toxic when used frequently, or on your skin?
Or maybe you’ve looked at the prices of “clean” products and realized it’s expensive to gamble on, since you’re not sure if it’s truly clean or “greenwashed.” And, as a pressed-for-time parent, you just buy whatever and hurry out of the store, depressed that once again you cannot figure out how to clean up the toxins in your products.
I have been through ALL of those things, as have many of the parents who are now living a toxic-free life. We all started somewhere!
Today, I have good news for all you parents who are trying to make safer choices for your family: help is here!
This week, MADE SAFETM launched! This MADE SAFETM seal makes it easy to know which are the cleanest, safest products for your family. What does this seal mean?
MADE SAFE means that products don’t contain known carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, flame retardants, heavy metals, pesticides/insecticides/herbicides, toxic solvents, harmful VOCs, neuro, behavioral and reproductive toxins, or GMOs. In addition, each and every ingredient has been scrutinized to ensure that it doesn’t build up in our bodies, persist in the environment, and doesn’t show general or aquatic toxicity.
That makes this a big help! Products that contain the seal are ones I can feel confidant are helping my family stay as free of toxins as they possibly can. To receive the seal, products are tested to be safe for the human environment with ingredient testing. Not only that, but MADE SAFE has a gold standard seal as well:
NONTOXIC CERTIFIED™, means that a product has passed the MADE SAFE ingredient screen and gone on to be lab-tested as a whole to ensure that the product in totality is safe. This step actually looks at how ingredients interact with each other in mixture to ensure the whole product won’t harm our health.
As you may know, right now certain companies are lobbying Congress to remove the possibility of mandatory GMO labeling for any states, even those with existing laws. So the fact that MADE SAFE has know come into existence is great news for those of you who want to avoid these chemicals! Here is a breakdown of the MADE SAFE seal process:
Step 1: Ingredients are screened against a comprehensive Toxicant Database for known carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, flame retardants, heavy metals, pesticides, toxic solvents, harmful VOCs, neuro, behavioral and reproductive toxins, and Genetically Modified ingredients.
Step 2: With over 84,000 chemicals in use today, and little to no public data on their impact to human health, the process goes beyond chemicals published on authoritative lists and actually aims to close data gaps on ingredients. MADE SAFE uses modeling, predictive analysis and the best available science to scrutinize each and every ingredient in a product for bioaccumulation (builds up in our bodies), persistence (builds up in the environment), and general and aquatic toxicity.
Step 3: Once a product has passed MADE SAFE, it can go for the gold standard NONTOXIC CERTIFIED seal, where the product is lab-tested as a whole to look at how ingredients interact in mixture to ensure the product in totality is safe for human health.
MADE SAFE is about starting with a base of safe ingredients; NONTOXIC CERTIFIED goes over and above to ensure the whole product is safe.
That’s amazing! Because I know the founder of MADE SAFE and much of their team, I trust this seal implicitly. Their dedication to helping people understand the value of reducing toxins and educating them on what is toxic precedes them and I have no doubt that MADE SAFE can help us all make our homes safe!
MADE SAFE is different from other seals, because:
- It crosses categories – baby, personal care, household and more.
- MADE SAFE investigates not just the toxicity of the amount of an ingredient, but whether they bioaccumulate in the human body, persists in the environment or shows general or aquatic toxicity.
- It ensures that human health is a priority when determine product safety.
- The screening process is comprehensive, including screening for GMOs.
- Unlike other labeling standards, like GRAS, if MADE SAFE cannot find enough information to determine that an ingredient is safe, they will not grant it their seal. This is huge!
- This is the only certification that looks at how ingredients interact in mixture.
- MADE SAFE works with a brands’ R&D to help them ensure all ingredients are safe.

Hi, I am really excited to have found you. I have lost family members including my mom to cancer and have made it my goal to do everything within my power to create a healthy environment for myself and my family. I was wondering if you have an app that I can install to help make shopping decisions a little easier? I know of another app that allows you to scan the upc of a food product which goes into a data and provides a breakdown of ingredients and any healthier alternatives. Please let me know as something similar would be of great benefit.
Thank you!

Hi Monica, I’m so sorry about your mom. Good for you! I’ve heard of some apps but don’t know much about them. I will keep that idea in mind for a future article. Thanks.
