My family and I might check out doing this diet but I’m going to need to modify to make my own Whole30 Shopping List. Ok, I know you’re looking at this, and saying, “You can’t modify it!! That’s beside the point!”
Well, I don’t feel like I need what Whole30 is meant for: to break bad habits. I mean, maybe I do, but after reading through the book (and it’s a fast and easy read), what I felt like I need is the diet!
It essentially boils down to meat/eggs, lots of vegetables and fruit. You also need healthy fats like coconut oil or ghee (for those of us who can’t do butter), seed and nut butters (no peanut!) and spices, plus very simple drinks. I love the diet itself, but I’m not concerned with going deeply into it and then coming out with a huge detox.
What Whole30 is good for is sugar detox. When I say “sugar,” what I really mean is sweetener. As you may know, my kids have been battling parasites so they should be off all the sweets. It’s extremely difficult! They walk around the house talking about
Tips to Create Your Own Affordable Whole30 Shopping List
Now, there is a downloadable Whole30 shopping list, but it’s not on the money for me. Additionally, after reading the cookbook, I realized that most of the extremely delicious meals are for TWO PEOPLE, not four. However, they are meant to be used as leftovers for breakfast. (Yea, I totally can’t eat dinner for breakfast.) Either way, I see that I’ll need to modify my shopping a bit in order to better fit in with my budget. Here are some of my budget adaptions for moving forward with the Whole30:
- Buying a bit more conventional produce.
Typically, we buy about 95% or more of our produce organic, but now I’ll be buying regularly priced thick skinned produce. I’ll be putting into practice the tips I wrote about on how to feed your family safely without organics. - Buying in bulk.
I’m a brand new member at a bulk store that carries organic and grass fed and I am LOVING. We filled up on meats and produce for a sweet $101 this weekend. Woohoo!! - Cooking in bulk.
I know we need to do this! My fridge busted this went for nearly a month and while waiting FOREVER for a repair (never break things in the holiday season), we purchases a small fridge so that we can store things in bulk in there. That means, we can cook in bulk more easily now that we have a place to put it all. I’m not great at this, but going to give it a try. - Cooking with kids.
I don’t think the girls can really do this many fruits and veggies and totally avoid sweets unless we all cook together. I’m trying to figure out how to put that all together, but change is good! I need stuff to occupy them as I constantly am taking away their tech, because I’m worried about the damage it might be doing to their brains. - Buying online.
Buying products online saves me the headache and time of running around to the store. At Lucky Vitamin when I stock up, my order minimum covers free shipping too! They give me the best prices I can find on the GMO free products I love.
My Whole30 Shopping List
This diet is as unique as everyone on it, so I’m going to share with you my list and how I plan on getting my kids to eat the stuff they don’t know. (They hate to experiment!) I’m convinced, though, that they can learn to love sweet potatoes as much as I do! Amelia tried a beet and a kale chip this week, so their tastes can improve!
- Meat: We are super-carnivores, so I’m doing this. I know quality pork is expensive and hard to come so I break down on that one (as long as there is gluten free sausage), but it’ll be steak, beef, chicken, pork and maybe we’ll foray into lamb and add on turkey.
- Eggs: I’m big on these – kids, not so much.
- Vegan non-soy cheese: It actually is probably not allowed on Whole30, but I need to bulk up what the kids eat.
- Non dairy creamer for my coffee. Sorry, breaking that rule.
- Veggies: Nothing off limits except legumes, asparagus and brussel sprouts (can’t do those last two and can’t stand them anyway).
- Fruit: Not too much because sugar but this is now what I call “dessert”!
- Almond Milk packs for Amelia. She needs a school beverage that’s not juice. Zoe drinks water.
- Coconut everything: milk milk, coconut aminos, you name it!
- Avocados
- Red sauces
- Fats: Ghee, Red Palm OIl, coconut oil, sunflower seed butter, allowed nuts, olive oil, beef and pork fat
- Some “Sexy” Food: This is what Whole30 calls sweet and delicious stuff done up without wheat/grains/starch, etc. Such as the lovely sweet potato pancake mix below. We won’t be going overboard with this but we will include it. TOO BAD. 🙂
- Spiralizer: Ok, I’m going to want to get all our options for “pasta” because I can’t go without!!

My family did the Whole 30 last May! We saw amazing results 🙂 I really want to give it another try sometime this year. I love your shopping list 🙂 It is really hard to give up that coffee creamer 😉

Wow, the whole family? Good for you!! My kids definitely have some ups from it, but also lots of detox downs 🙁
I modified it, I’m afraid. Can’t give up my creamer but it’s very low sugar and no carrageenan or dairy at least!
