YumUniverse Review: Plant-Based Eating Guide

Filed Under: what to eat Tagged With: dairy-free, gluten free, plant based diet

As you know, I’m constantly on the quest for great, delicious, nutritious food for my family and myself that is also allergen-free.  I was delighted to be invited to YumUniverse.com, launching it’s Lifetime YumUniverse membership today!

What is YumUniverse?
Lots of people have been telling me about plant-based and raw diets, and our family has pretty much been eating paleo for the last 2 years.  The problem with paleo and how we’ve implemented it is that it’s a LOT of red meat.  Now,  yes, that is our interpretation – we have a quantity of grass-fed beef that has to be eaten, and we do not eat or like fish, so that leaves a little chicken and a whole lot of red meat for many meals in our day.  So, when I saw the site for YumUniverse (which completely drew me in by having a recipe for Gluten-free, Dairy-free Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies on its front page – my favorite), I had to check it out.

The real reason for this is that it’s time for my family to go the next stage.  What this means is creating meals with denser nutrients, less meat, and God help me, making homemade snacks.  There are WONDERFUL gluten-free companies out there that I use, but for my children, I need to move to true preservative-free food – and the only way to do that is to make it, meaning I’m not just looking to eat better, I’m looking to train up my cooking skills.  A YumUniverse membership does just that.  Not only do they send you cookbooks and meal planning guides, they have videos and blog posts on how to do things like cut an onion.  (You’ll remember my misadventures in this area!)  These recipes bring in plant-based foods into your diet to not only feed you nutritionally, but to satisfy you more.

Who is YumUniverse good for?
Their recipes are:

  • gluten-free
  • soy free
  • casein-free
  • meat-free BUT most recipes have an “omnivore” adaptation, so you can add meat or animal-based proteins as you like.  (“Most” because you really wouldn’t add meat to a smoothie, would you?)
So they are perfect for allergen-free households!  They are also wonderful for those starting up in GF/CF diets because there is step-by-step instruction on how to start and what to do.

What’s in a Lifetime Membership

About YumUniverse
Like many people who live this food lifestyle, founder Heather Crosby grew up on the typical (and awful) American diet, and by the age of 21, was experiencing symptoms like regular colds and bouts of strep and given “vague and conflicting medical diagnoses.”  She did what many of us do and took her health in her own hands by doing years of vigorous research and studying.  She has not had a cold in 3 years after changing her food habits.  YumUniverse is a site she created to help the rest of us figure out our journey more easily.  Heather is a a professional whole food, plant-based recipe developer and a T. Colin Campbell Foundation Certified Plant-Based Nutrition Coach.
