Host a Real Food, Allergy-Free Thanksgiving with an Organic Turkey

Thanksgiving dinner

This year, we’ve decided to do something a little different for the holiday. While we are still visiting family on Thanksgiving, I thought I would treat my family and children with something new on the menu: an organic turkey! This is not just a first for me in terms of purchase, it’ll be the first turkey I roast. Naturally, I will still be keeping my entire meal organic or GMO-free, but it will also be free of gluten, dairy and soy, as well, of course, as preservatives and more. This is what I have so far for the “healthy” menu, which I’ll do as soon as my mother in law arrives:

  • Roasted Organic Turkey: I want to do something different. This week, I learned a trick: rub truffle oil under the skin before roasting. Worth a try!
  • Stuffing: I’m going to stuff it with gluten free stuffing, since it’s already a familiar food for my kids. Maybe even mushrooms and I will certainly be adding some carrots and celery.
  • Mashed Potatoes: I will add cauliflower for extra nutrition too. Meanwhile, Whole Foods has an awesome recipe for Mashed Potatoes with White Truffle Oil…as long as I’m buying the oil, right?
  • Applesauce: Don’t ask me why, but Amelia LOVES organic unsweetened applesauce from Whole Food’s 365 brand – and I can use it to bake with too, so why not? Win!
  • Sweet Potato Biscuits: I’ll use Bob’s Red Mill Pie Crust Mix. I used this before and they came out AWESOME! I will post the recipe as soon as I find it.
  • Salad: You can’t get all that in and NOT have a salad. Spring mix with spinach it is (yup, Amelia loves spinach), and my special dressing which is made with balsamic vinegar, EVOO, fresh squeezed orange juice and my proprietary spice mix (all organic).
  • Cranberry Almond Cookies: I’m excited to whipping up a dairy-free, vegan, soy-free version of these awesome cookies that my favorite baker made with all the bad stuff in it! Yum, yum! I’ll probably add chocolate chips cookies too – my family loves those and I think I’ll add oatmeal to “health” it up.

I couldn’t do all this without a great store like Whole Foods Market! They make it easy – great deals, lots of organic options, and easy online ordering! Why is a Whole Foods turkey a great option? Because they give YOU options. You can get free range, organic, brined, heirloom or a Kosher turkey. See your choices below:

For starters, of course there’ll be a turkey. I make a brined turkey…..super moist and delicious 😉 My sides will likely a green bean casserole, Squash casserole and a rice and broccoli casserole! There’s a few more things that’ll be added to the list, like deviled eggs, pies and all that good stuff lol.
