Smoothies are awesome, aren’t they? Convenient, healthy and perfect for lunch. But how many times have you had a smoothie and then felt really hungry not an hour later? Well, there is a solution: smoothie bowls!
What Are Smoothie Bowls?
That was my first question.Smoothie bowls are a smart way to make a meal out of a smoothie. You eat them with a spoon rather than a straw. The first time I ever had one was on a recent trip to a vegan shop, and it had too many things to even remember them all. That’s what is great about them: part liquid, part full meal, and every bit interesting! They are perfect if you’re a vegan or on a special diet, since they mainly consist of superfoods.
Wouldn’t it be cool to have a whole cookbook of smoothie bowl recipes? I was lucky enough to receive a copy of one to review: “Beautiful Smoothie Bowls” by my friend and fellow blogger, Carissa Bonham of Creative Green Living, tells you everything you need to know about them, from their history to the benefits of chewing. The smoothie I made in the video below was extremely filling, I couldn’t finish it in one sitting!
In “Beautiful Smoothie Bowls,” Carissa gives each recipe an icon for vegan, paleo, gluten free and dairy free for ease of use to those of us who have restricted diets. She then gives you a list of best tools to make smoothies, how to construct one and a “troubleshooting.” guide. (Come on, now, you KNOW you’ve made a smoothie that you came out just wrong, like an “unappetizing shade of brown.” #BeenThere)
Each recipe comes with an image designed to make your mouth water! Who wouldn’t want to eat these, right now? Smoothie bowls are so easy to make.
Superfood Nutrition
The next section is the best. Carissa goes into great detail about each of the superfoods usedin these smoothie bowls, from fruits to oats to matcha. She covers what nutrients they provide, warnings about pesticides, how to buy them, the best ways to use them and more.
That’s followed by the recipes themselves, 80 in total! The book is outlined in color order – yes, color order! That way you can eat your way through the rainbow every day. Carissa writes most of them but they also contain some contributions from great smoothie creators, like Larisha Campbell of We’re Parents.
Finally, she ends most recipes with a tip on things like how to substitute or where to buy an item in the recipe.
