One of my main tips I suggest for families with allergies and food sensitivities to get through the holiday is to stuff your kids before and during the event.
How can you do that?
Here are three easy ways:
- Stuff them with a large meal. I mean, big meals. My kids love meatballs and my youngest loves GF pasta – OR spaghetti squash. This is a great meal for filling them up, and you can sneaky chef broccoli and flax into your meatballs, for added nutrition. If this is not their favorite, try something else truly filling: chili and rice, shepherd’s pie, etc. With trick or treating starting at 6pm, a great big 5:00 dinner is perfect.
- Make your own goodies. Again, you want something filling that they REALLY love. Perhaps cupcakes with safe candy sprinkled on top of safe frosting. A s’mores cupcake is PERFECT if you are going to a party with a fire pit; tempt your kids with this rather than the dairy- and GMO-loaded chocolate bars that are typically used.
- Give them filling snacks. As the night goes on, don’t let your kids eat out of their candy bag but buy them treats that they love which will fill them! Apples are a great choice (easy to eat on the go); another great idea is granola bars.

I like to take my homemade Granola Clusters on a trip. They pack well, and are not too messy. Best part is I know what is in them, and no one is having an allergic reaction on my trip!

Yummy! Love homemade but I’m too lazy…I cook enough already! 🙂

I love to have nuts on road trips because they are so filling; I’m a nut fiend so usually a nice salted nut and then maybe some dark-chocolate covered ones!

On road trips we take dried fruit, veggie chips, trailmix and sometimes fruit snacks. They all come very handy in a pinch.
