In this house, we are pretty good at recycling, but as a blogger who reviews products, you can imagine how the discarded boxes and envelopes pile up. When She Speaks invited me to participate in their Future Friendly/Conserve-It-All blogging program, I thought I’d do something I’ve been longing to do: start reusing some of our many boxes and container, turning them into pretty and useful objects.  I’ll confess, I’m not much of a crafter, but a few years of having kids in elementary school has taught me a few tricks, so I enlisted the aide of the girls, waiting for early dismissal Wednesday, and started crafting with them.

This is what we started with:

plain boxes

Amelia was fairly distracted so I took up the reigns and, while it’s not perfect, I like how my portion came out:

gina's box

This is what Amelia did:

Zoe was engaged but not “dressed” for photos, but I will show you her skill for painting:

And Mom helped of course:

Zoe's Box back

The really pleasure, though, was after our boxes were completed and dried, Amelia immediately grabbed them and started using them to hold “presents.”  (Packing items as  presents is a favorite game of hers.)  That made me so happy!   Now I have 2 great boxes to store the kids’ crafts – can’t have enough of those – and a new way to engage the kids, turn off the media, and have fun.  My next challenge:

Can’t wait to see what you do with the jug. We got a box with a huge sheet of brown paper and it made anD incredible tracing activity.

Nice idea! We need to start getting more paper. I wonder if baking paper could double as tracing paper?

I go through so many boxes, our UPS guy must think we own stock in Amazon! I know I should try reusing them more, but I don’t like them piling up. I’ll definitely use the opportunity for a craft project one rainy day, though!

We try not to let them pile up, exactly, but recycling is only collected once a week! 🙂

We have lots of boxes at our house too! The other night the kids made a big fort in the lawn with them. I was super happy about that especially since they are all growing up and barely play with things like that anymore.

Lawn fort!! That is brilliant, I love it.

You can use those cardboard boxes in the garden to keep the weeds down.

My ds7 just brought a note home from school about making a vehicle out of recycled materials. I groan about the project every year though the kids love doing it.

Ah- like a soapbox racer? We made them last year, very cool. Great tip about the weeds, but all the more reason to decorate them, lol.

Oh, yea, they really do give you a much bigger box than you need, every single time! They used to use smaller boxes, I think.

What a great day to reuse and repurpose!
