Ok, ok, I know this is a war raging debate. I just wanted to share with you a few things from my perspective.
The new dev ped we visited for Zoe said that she thinks this has been disproven and it is a waste of research and funding that could be better put to use to track. I’m just giving her opinion, and she’s been WIDELY recommended by every special needs parent I’ve met out here.
That being said, there are some things you should know about Zoe. She does not have “movie autism”. She does repetitive behavior, lining up toys and running in circles, but it’s not all the difficult to break her out of it. She makes eye contact, she’s affectionate (Dr. S said, “yes child with autism often are with their parents”) but NOT just with me and Chris, she *can* do a degree of play with her peers, she can mouth the beginning sounds of words she’s knows and she can sing a tune. I don’t know about you but I never thought of those qualities as autism, but as Dr S. said, “you’re thinking of the Hollywood version”. Her biggest difficulties are communication, peer socialization, and stress in unfamiliar situations.
The thing about Zoe is she is EXACTLY the same as when she was born, in terms of what sets her off. She didn’t manifest delays until 18 months or so, BUT she has had difficulties with all the same things since birth, so this is truly something she was born with, I have ZERO qualms about her vaccinations.
Dr. S. did tell us that the latest testing on perfectly healthy pregnant women with proper diets and no drugs or chemicals in them shows about 123 foreign substances in the placenta.
ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY THREE.
Her conclusion is that rise we are now seeing in childhood disabilities and conditions is “modern life”. Wow. But when I think about it:
Years back I took a class in computer organization (way harder than it sounds), and the professor was PhD and had done extensive lab testing on E&M emissions. This was of interest to me when I worked in telecom as me and the engineers I hung with in and around the telecom hub in downtown Manhattan OFTEN wondered about lots of their colleagues getting cancer. My teacher’s tests had proven inconclusively that you should NEVER EVER put the back of your TV on the same wall where a child or baby is sleeping on the other site. EVER.
Then he said, “Did you know that one of the fields with the highest rate of prostate cancer is state trooper?” Well, guess where they keep the radar (according to my teacher anyway).
Back to my visit: Dr. S THEN said that there was recently an incident where a doctor who catered to non-vaccinated children had a breakout of German measles in his office. German measles can cause blindess and brain damage…
What’s my point? I’d think long and hard as a parent about NOT vaccinating against the big diseases (ok dont talk to me about HIV or chicken pox shots, that’s annoying). Diseases don’t get wiped off the face of the planet, they are just controlled with vaccines. Is there a link? Perhaps we don’t yet have the technology to say for sure. Perhaps the vaccines trigger something ELSE, something that would get triggered at some point no matter what. I just know this isn’t true for Zoe.
One more note. I am against forced vaccinations. It seems to me that drug companies have an unhealthy interest in pushing unnecessary vaccinations. I do HOWEVER think you really need to consider all things while making this choice for your child. Our children are exposed to ALL kinds of germs at daycares, preschools, and other areas where they are participating on their own younger and younger. I definitely think parents need to make this choice themselves.
UPDATE: Please read the comments for a link to an interesting article about the relationships BETWEEN these disorders and vaccines discovered by a Canadian scientist. I still don’t think it applies to Zoe, personally, but then again there was no dramatic change in her behavior.
