See that couple up there? That’s my Mom and Dad. Both are in heaven now, but they were married 63 years before Mom passed away. They had their ups and downs, but for as long as I can remember, they showed me what marriage should be: compromise, faithfulness, and ultimately, the hard arse work of making a marriage last. THAT’S what I strive every day for the most important human being in my life: my husband.
It hasn’t been easy but after 20 years together, I learned – the hard way. That’s why I jumped on the chance to review this next book, available at my Amazon affiliate: “The Marriage You’ve Always Wanted” by Gary Chapman (of “The 5 Love Languages” fame) shows you how.
WHO THIS BOOK IS FOR
Dr. Chapman’s book is written on Christian principles and supported by Scripture, so this book is for believers, even if only one of you is. It’s optimal for newlyweds or those about to get married, but I’d say it’s worthwhile for a marriage one where a spouse – or both – are just having everyday struggles…because after a few decades together, that happens too. Seriously. There’s only so many you can argue about that stupid “leaving the toilet seat up” habit! (Did you ever fall in, in the middle of the night? I have. All I got was, “You should’ve looked first.” 🙂
This book mimics a lot of the stuff I’ve already learned, plus it contained doable approaches to the stuff I want to learn, like better communication. Chapman tackles all the major topics, from sex to finances, to the REAL biggie: division of labor. I really liked that he stresses very much on the “team” aspect of marriage and why focusing on that is healthy and works. Dr. Chapman provides concrete examples and tips on how to do that.
Some of the assigned tasks are HARD AS HELL to do. I mean, truly, breaking your will hard, but that IS marriage. Lots of sacrifice, but in the end, totally worth it. My only other criticism is that this book is more of an overview, a starting point for newly marrieds and those who wish to strengthen their bond. You would need counseling for more difficult issues like chronic debt or infidelity.
This is a great book for couples that want to fix, plan or strengthen the bond of a lasting marriage, IF they are up to the challenge. It’s also a quick and easy read. I recommend it.
