Love popcorn? So do I. Sure, especially when it’s paired with delicious flavors that make it even more tempting than the boring old plain popped with salt or butter. Actually, I can’t stand butter on my popcorn and I don’t do dairy anyway so…
But what if that delicious popped corn was actually benefitting the community, specifically, the autism community?
Well, that’s exactly what this delicious brand that I was sent a sample of, Popcorn For The People, is doing!
What’s their mission?
We provide meaningful & lasting employment for adults with autism and other developmental disabilities.
We create employment through popcorn! Every tin you purchase provides at least an hour of meaningful employment.
This is really critical to parents like me who are raising children on the autism spectrum because the unemployment rate in this population is 80-90%! That’s enough to make you shudder, especially for those of us who’ve seen our children really shine in certain areas, like logistics, programming, math, sorting, designing, etc.
Popcorn for the People was inspired Shirley Bier, who was a cook that created a community table every year for friends, family, and neighbors. She’d always invite someone who was in need, and the dinner supported community members during difficult times. Isn’t that a wonderful idea?
They had a message:
EAT WELL AND DO GOOD!
Well, who wouldn’t be on board with that! Popcorn for the People adopted this mission. Here is what they do:
- They provide hands-on training for autistic adults, followed by real employment, in food preparation, order fulfillment, and sales.
- They encourage success and nurture employees.
- They have a meeting place for members to interact with each other.
- 100% of their profits will go to fund Work For Good, a nonprofit that “focuses on creating meaningful and lasting employment for adults with Autism and Developmental Disabilities.”
And of course, all of this shows that our kids can and do become productive members of a society successfully filling jobs in our community.
Their mission was also inspired by Sam:
Sam is a high functioning 24-year-old with autism. … We asked ourselves: where can a bright, energetic young man who views the world a little differently find work, fulfillment, and happiness? Just when we were beginning to think the options were grim we spotted Sam gleefully tossing popcorn into his mouth while laughing at Monty Python. We decided to combine America’s favorite snack food with Sam’s passion and unique worldview to create popcorn with a difference.
Sam was just their first success story and he helped create the popcorn when they opened their doors. Now, about the popcorn…
Is it good? You BET! No boring flavors here. Everything from Popcorn For The People packs a flavorful punch. Some of the flavors include:
- Cookies ‘N Cream
- Dark Chocolate Espresso
- Apple Caramel Popcorn
- Buffalo Wing Popcorn
- X-Treme Caramel & Chocolate Popcorn
- French Toast
You can either buy bags of popcorn or tins. The tins are an awesome idea and a great way to try multiple flavors. The tins come in 4 sizes, from 1 to 6.5 gallons, and make a perfect gift too. You can also buy it by the bag. And, you can do a fundraiser with their products too.
There are more flavors than that! My favorite in our tin, which contains a trio, was Buffalo Wing. Yummy!
So check out this great nonprofit and consider buying from it the next time you need a great gift!
